Our vision for R.E is based on the national guidance issued by the Lambeth Standing Advisory Council for Religious Education (SACRE).
In R.E. pupils discover, explore and consider different questions in local, national and global contexts, through learning about religions and learning from religions. They learn to appraise the value of wisdom from different sources, to develop and express their insights in response, and to agree or disagree respectfully.
Religious education contributes dynamically to children and young people’s education in schools by provoking challenging questions about the meaning and purpose in life, beliefs about God, ultimate reality, issues of right and wrong and what it means to be human. Our world is enriched by a wide and profound diversity of cultures and beliefs. As human beings, we are strengthened and empowered by learning from each other. Engaging and stimulating religious education helps to nurture informed and resilient responses to misunderstanding, stereotyping and division, which is why we encourage all children to participate. It offers a place of integrity and security where difficult or ‘risky’ questions can be tackled within a safe but challenging context.
At Henry Cavendish Pupils should gain and deploy the skills needed to understand, interpret and evaluate texts, sources of wisdom and authority and other evidence. They learn to articulate clearly and coherently their personal beliefs, ideas, values and experiences while respecting the right of others to differ.
At Henry Cavendish, classes learn about a different religion each half term, with a focus on a particular theme. As they progress through the school the children will revisit each religion several times under different themes, whereby developing their depth and breadth of knowledge over time. Learning will often be extended by a local visit, such as to a local church, synagogue or mosque.

R.E. in the Early Years Foundation Stage
R.E. is covered and explored throughout the year in the EYFS through teaching provision that covers RE concepts, stories and the ideas of various beliefs. For example through the experience of different festivals and celebrations by watching videos of children from around the UK and the world, preparing for and celebrating different festivals, learning songs, sharing food and games and through circle times, discussing and comparing family traditions and practices at home. Stories, clothes and music from a range of cultures and faiths are available for children to explore at all times.
