Teaching English and a developing a love of literature and writing is at the very heart of our curriculum. We know that sound literacy skills are key to children’s achievement in all areas of the curriculum and that learning to read effectively, efficiently and for enjoyment is an important life skill. We link our learning of English with other subjects across the curriculum, drawing on technical grammar, punctuation and spelling skills through Topic lessons as well as developing tools and styles useful to write in a broad range of genres.

We assess English at Henry Cavendish using the Target Tracker system. Using the statements from this enables us to ensure that there is progression across the school in the expectations of skills and understanding acquired by the children. The children’s progression against the statements of the relevant year group is assessed each half term, with a summative judgement made at the end of each academic year.

Curriculum Events – At Henry Cavendish we hold a number of curriculum events throughout the year, to share the exciting and creative learning experience that we offer.  These include curriculum evenings for each year group, Reading Café and ‘Phonics Stay and Play’ and workshops on Phonics at home.  For more information and resources to download, please follow the link below.
