Application forms are available from October/November and must be returned to Lambeth by mid January. Applications can also be made on-line through Lambeth Education’s website. www.lambeth.gov.uk. Parents will be notified by the Local Authority whether they have a place or not in April.

Selection criteria for a place in our Reception Class:

  • Looked after children (Children who are care of social services)
  • Medical or Social Needs
  • Siblings
  • Distance (straight line distance)

A WELCOME MEETING

Once you have been offered a place at either our Reception or Nursery class you and your child will be invited to a short but important meeting. This gives you both a chance to see the classroom where your child will be working and to meet the teacher and some of the other children. This visit is essential as it helps children to feel confident about starting school.

HOME VISITS

If you are offered a place at our Reception or Nursery class we will arrange a home visit before your child starts. Home visits will last approximately 30 – 45 minutes and you will be visited by one of our teaching staff who will be accompanied by either a Teaching Assistant or an Early Years Educator.

During a home visit staff will:

1. Talk to you and your child

2. Complete the Pre Entry Forms

3. Answer any questions or concerns you may have

4. Confirm the date when your child will start

PARENT TOURS

Parents are welcome to come and tour our school to see how we do things. The tours last approximately 30 – 45 minutes and you will be among either 3 or 4 sets of other parents. If you would like to come and have a look around either of our sites please contact the school office and they will be able to give you the next available dates.

EARLY YEARS FOUNDATION STAGE UNIT – NURSERY

At both sites we have an Early Years Foundation Stage Unit which links our Nursery and Reception classes. Children usually join the Nursery Class soon after their third birthday. We offer part time places (15 hours per week and 3 hours per day). We also offer some full time places, parents are entitled to the first 15 hours free and any additional hours can be topped up. We currently charge £5.00 per hour – (Parents can pay for this through the Child Care Voucher Scheme). Full time places can be between 1 – 2 full days per week, over and above their 5 mornings or 5 afternoon sessions.

Part Time Morning place
9.00 – 12.00
Afternoon Place
12.30 – 3.30
Full Time 9.00 – 3.30

If you are interested in obtaining a place in one of our Nursery Classes, you will need to register your child’s details in our Interest Book. Please telephone the office at either the Balham or Streatham site, giving the name, date of birth and address of your child. We keep this information in our ‘Interest Book’ and will write to you, with an application form, when we admit children with your child’s date of birth.

  • Distance (shortest walking distance)

Please note, a place in our Nursery does not guarantee a place in the Reception class.

MID-YEAR TRANSFERS

All mid-year transfers are now dealt with by the Local Authority – Lambeth Education. If you have just moved to the area, or wish to transfer to Henry Cavendish you will need to contact Lambeth for an application form. All new children joining the school other than in the Nursery and Reception classes are allocated a ‘buddy’, who will make sure that your child has friends to play with and someone to help them find their way around. We also have an Every Child Matters Officer who will ensure your child settles well.
